Description

The bronze statue of the animal heads of the twelve zodiac animals in the Old Summer Palace was originally part of the fountain outside the Haiyan Hall. It was a red bronze statue during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. In 1860, the British and French allied forces invaded China and burned the Old Summer Palace, and the bronze statues of animal heads began to be lost overseas.

As of December 2020, the seven lost bronze statues of animal heads in Yuanmingyuan, including the heads of ox, monkey, tiger, pig, rat, rabbit, and horse, have returned to the motherland in different ways. Among them, the pig head bronze statue and the horse head bronze statue were purchased by Mr. Ho Hongshen in 2003 and 2019 respectively and returned to the country. On April 26, 2013, the French Pinault family announced in Beijing to donate rat and rabbit heads to China free of charge. On November 13, 2019, Stanley Ho donated the bronze statue of the horse head to the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and returned it to the Yuanmingyuan for permanent collection. The whereabouts of the remaining five are still unknown.

This asset will reproduce the grand gathering of the twelve beast heads.
