Description

CineLens SPHERICAL Big Box of Glass is a collection of lens objects that use verified real-world data from VFX.

These can attach to any CineCamera in Unreal.

These are creative LOOKs, NOT a full lens model. Addtl info on that difference included within the Tech Info.

How a physical lens blurs is determined by the relation of the aperture of the lens to the sensor on the camera.

A 50mm lens of one type may indeed look very different than another.

The same lens on a larger sensor, will blur the same, but the result will have a wider Field of View. (FoV)

The focal length should be seen as reference to HOW a lens blurs, NOT it’s FoV.

Diff lenses of same focal length may make the subject seem closer/further away than others.

For a similar FoV, the position may need to be adjusted, which can require us to position ourselves more intimate/distant from our subject, which in turn is one of factors that give lenses a distinct “personality”.

Required plugins:

127 lenses over 24 sets:

(Names greeked to balance copyright concerns with need to reference specific physical data.)

Created from VFX production grid shots, solved in 3DE and exported as STmaps.

Lens objects are linked to only distort maps, but complete distort/undistort pairs from solve are included.

Can be exported back to 32-bit textures EXR to use in other apps.

Technical Details

Number of Unique Effects: 127

LODs: No

Number of Textures: 254

Supported Development Platforms:

Windows: Yes

Mac: Yes

Documentation:

Unreal 5.3 makes it very easy to switch between lens objects on any CineCamera.

Sensor size, focal length, distortion and ANA ratio are all embedded in these lens objects.

Enable Camera Calibration plug-in, restart and you can attach a lens object to any CineCamera in Unreal and are ready to point towards any of the assets.

Important/Additional Notes:

VFX lens ST maps value quality over FPS.

32 bit EXR source images will certainly be a drag on performance.

Likely more helpful for Cinematics than GamePlay.

Tested on both Windows and Mac. Very responsive workflow. Should be ok on Linux.

These are creative LOOKs, NOT a full lens model.

Full lens models would include multiple distortion maps to emulate focus pull lens breathing, vignettes, flares/glares, iris blades, bokeh kernel and lens/iris pulls. If there is interest., I may create some examples of full models at a later date.
